SCI/D Nursing and Staff Scholarships

John Brako Nursing Scholarship Fund

Named in honor of longtime New England Chapter Board member John Brako (1965 – 2019).

John served in the U.S. Army’s 1st Special Operations Command as part of an operational detachment of an airborne psychological operations unit. He was a trained interrogator in Russian and Italian languages. He also trained as a reconnaissance commando in “Recondo” school which included SERE tactics (survival, escape, resistance, evasion).

John, despite his MS illness, took great pride in competing in the Paralyzed Veterans National Veterans Wheelchair Games throughout the United States and the New England Winter Sports Clinics.

Although John’s life was short he lived every day to its fullest. He will be forever cherished as an inspiring man with a warm personality by all who knew him.

New England PVA offers financial assistance though the John Brako Nursing Scholarship Fund for those clinicians and staff in the SCI/D care specialties at the West Roxbury, MA and Brockton, MA VAMCs.

• Professional Enrichment – Financial assistance up to $500 per year for SCI/D clinical and professional staff of both the West Roxbury and Brockton VAMCs to attend seminars, classes or training in SCI/D related subjects. This includes PT, OT and RTs desiring to add credentials to their existing ones. A one-year commitment to continue working on their current SCI/D ward, specialty, or clinic is required.
• Nursing Scholarships – Scholarships up to $500 per year for those SCI/D clinical and professional staff of both the West Roxbury and Brockton VAMCs wishing to become nurses or add to their existing RN licenses and certifications with a one-year commitment to continue working on their current SCI/D ward, specialty, or clinic.

This request must be received no less than 30 days prior to starting or attending the specific seminar, class or training requesting funding for. Please allow 30-45 days for review and response to your application.
